As the weather gets warmer, I find myself wanting something that’s light for Lunch. Light yet filling enough to last me until Dinner time. That usually means eggs on toast. Or eggs AND toast as the case may be. The thing is, I’m not a fan of scrambled. Period. The sight of them quivering on toast slices like Jello makes me want to heave.
Boiled is good, so is fried, but poached I love. Yet the simplest thing to cook is also the fucking hardest! I’ve heard all the stories about putting vinegar into the water, and stirring vigorously with a spoon to create a vortex whirlpool kind of thing, but lemme tell ya people. It’s all bullshit! The vortex whirlpool thing only succeeds in creating a thing resembling a kind of fucked up looking jellyfish. NOT appetizing.
So, feeling like the world’s biggest idiot, I went looking online to see if I could find out how to poach an egg properly. After searching for what seemed like hours, I found this website. Finally, someone having the same issues as me! This blog author tried the Delia Smith way, the Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall way, and the Elaine Corn way. (Whoever she is.) Nothing worked as it was supposed to.
Then they got an email. This email said the best way to poach an egg was as follows.
Get some microwaveable clingfilm
Get a cup
Push the cling film into the cup, and crack the egg into the cling film
You should be able to tie the clingfilm around the top of the egg,
Drop egg into boiling water, and poach normally, it’ll taste great, and you wont have to spend ages scrubbing cooked on egg off the damn pan.
The result? A perfect poached egg every time.
So I decided to try this. It bloody works people! The only variation I made after my first attempt, was to brush the inside of the cling wrap with a bit of oil before cracking the egg into it. This helps to prevent the egg from sticking to the cling wrap. When that happens, you’re left with your egg white still on the cling wrap and your yolk on your toast. I’d rather not spend 10 minutes scraping the egg white off the cling wrap before eating.
So, lunch today? Two perfect Poached eggs on toast. A rather unconventional way of cooking them, but a bloody tasty lunch!
Ciao.
I made this twice this weekend! Once for dinner on Friday and again for breakfast on Saturday. However, on Saturday I put it on an english muffin and added a slice of cheese and a few strips of bacon. YUM
my fave egg prep is “over easy” (which is kinda like poached, right?) but only when ordered at restaurants,,, when I’m cooking, an omelet/scrambled hybrid is what I usually produce… I’m looking forward to trying out this poaching way the next time I hanker for eggs

You know how you feel at the sight of scrambled eggs? That’s what I feel when I look at a poached egg.
But I’ll pass this info onto the Warden who enjoys poached eggs from time to time. Although I’d bet money on the fact that he only makes and eats them just to watch me heave. He’s a fucker like that.
